Loco for Barocco

The best places happen on accident. My roommate and I made the obvious decision to go to Angelo’s for half-price pizza on Monday. Is it the best pizza in the world? No. Is there such a thing as great pizza in Cleveland? No. Was it good enough for us? Yes. Anytime I can get artichoke on a pizza, I’m a pretty happy camper. However, after circling the whole block for a parking spot and looking at the miserable children waiting for a table we quickly realized this was not going to be the “pizza getaway” we had in mind.

I quickly turned to my Urbanspoon App, after one spin it came up with Angelo’s Pizza. Much to my demise, I set the phone down and we resolved to just drive down Madison. I love a good dive bar, and Madison has plenty to offer, but for where I eat? I like it to be sanitary.

On our left was this house looking place that looked out of the ordinary, clean even. Without further hesitation we pulled into the meager parking lot in the back and made our way to the front. Our first image of what we are walking into is this:

So this is a comic book, Bob Marley, industrial kind of place? I’m in. Not necessarily a combination I would put together myself. Which was foreshadowing for the food I was about to indulge in.

Maybe I’m sheltered but for the first time I discovered arepas (ah-ray-pas.) It’s basically a latino gyro. We had a cheesy corn dip appetizer and settled on burgers that we simply couldn’t wait to have. There were FIVE different sauces to choose from (our favorite was easily the pineapple.) The burgers had a layer of crushed potato chips, it was a perfect crunchy salty edition.

Overall it was a great experience. The service was sweet, friendly, prompt and the prices were the best part! Such neat and lively decor, it beat imitation Italian with impossible wait times any night. Never had Colombian (correction!) before? Me either, and I loved it.

  2. It’s Colombian food, not Cuban. Although some items maybe similar, overall they are very different. You may want to try other latin american cuisines, all very tasty in their unique ways.
